Each kit contains 2 CD’s.
The first CD contains the FAA Knowledge Test presentations.
Many of the presentations have internal links to extra illustrations and on
line links to FAA regulations and publications, live aviation weather,
navigation simulators, and other useful sites. Flight training PowerPoint
classes offer great visuals, save time, and have the ability to “toggle” back
and forth very quickly between illustrations and other resources. PowerPoint is
most useful when using a projector but is also ideal for teaching one on one with
a laptop computer. Note that some of the
web site links such as A
The second CD contains hundreds of illustrations directly from the FAA Pilots Hand book of Aeronautical Knowledge, Airplane Flying Hand book, and Instrument Flying Hand book. These slides can be used to create your own custom classes on a wide range of subjects. Each chapter of these resources is a separate presentation, and every slide or picture can be copied and pasted into an existing chapter or used in a presentation of your own creation. They open in the same fashion as the ground school PowerPoints.
The CD’s are locked and cannot be changed. However all contents can be sent to your hard drive, “My Docs” where any change can be made, including additions of your own design. Any illustration or slide from any of the presentations can be copied and pasted to any of the other presentations or used to create a presentation entirely your own.
Some computers will play this material faster from the hard
drive than from the CD. To play the contents from the hard drive send the
entire CD contents to “My Documents” or to a “library” folder, (windows 7).
To begin working with the CD’s place the FAA Knowledge
Test CD in your CD/

To start the Private Pilot PowerPoint presentation, left click on the CFI Toolbox PVT 1012 icon.
The following screen should appear

Now left click the Private PowerPoint icon
The screen shown on the next page should appear.

Note that the presentations fall into two categories “Chapters” and “Links”.
The “Chapters” eg. “Chap 1 PVT pp” are parts of the main presentation.
The “Link” e.g. “Link landscape charts” presentations are
hyperlink targets placed in presentations separate from the main chapters, so
that the main chapter presentations can be edited without displacing the
hyperlinks. The “Link” presentations can be opened separately and you can add more
slides to a hyperlink file but should add them to the end to retain proper
access. Caution, if you change the name
of a hyperlink “Link” file you may not be able to access it when in slide show unless
you edit the chapter hyperlink button
itself. If you are not accustomed to editing hyperlinks contact us, we
will be glad to assist you with that function.
The flight training PowerPoint presentation can be followed in a simple slide to slide manner starting with Chapter 1 without using any hyperlinks except to proceed to the next chapter. This will result in a very efficient class that follows the Gleim teaching order. However, any chapter order can be used since each chapter is a separate PowerPoint presentation.
If an instructor wishes to go into greater depth the hyperlink buttons can be used to “toggle” back and forth to other related materials or on line resources. Chapters having to do with weather, airspace, FAA regulations and navigation simulators are good examples of this option. The hyper links are also handy for answering student questions and can be navigated quickly with some practice.
The Hyper links are located in the “action buttons” when in “slide show.” Action button samples are shown below.
Internal links have green buttons and the external or online links have blue buttons. Also notice that chapter slides have a blue background and hyperlink slides have a green background.
Internal links are green Web sites (external links) are blue

While in “slide show” simply left click on the action button to go to the link. To return from an internal link, right click and select “end show” or scroll past the end of the link slides. To return from an on line link simply close the on line site.
Getting comfortable with the presentations
There is no better way to prepare for an aviation “PowerPoint” class than to get plenty of practice navigating the presentations.
We suggest that you copy the entire flight training CD contents to “my documents”. Presentations normally respond more quickly from your hard drive than from a CD, particularly the hyperlinks and portions that access web based training aids. A particular chapter will also run faster if you scroll through it and “exercise” the hyperlinks before doing your presentation.
The CD’s are closed so there is no danger of breaking down the presentations by experimenting. With a bit of practice you will be able to navigate very quickly to any part of the presentation. The more you practice the smoother the flow. We suggest writing notes of your presentation flow at first until you know your way around the system with a good degree of comfort.
PowerPoint slides can also be printed on transparencies.
If you decide to use transparencies it is recommended that you print each illustration on paper first to check its quality and size, and make any changes necessary, then print a transparency of the same illustration. Refer to your Gleim test guide and place each paper and transparency next to each other in teaching order into ring binders. The paper copies in your ring binder will provide a reference for placing the transparencies back into the binder in teaching order. A lot of ink can be saved if the back ground color is changed to “clear” or “none” prior to printing. The color of the printing may also have to be changed for better contrast.
Be sure to place your
transparencies into crystal clear polypropylene sheet protectors
only. Protectors made of other materials tend to stick and transfer the ink to
the protectors.

An FAA knowledge test class can be taught in a number of ways but there are some things we have found very effective.
If a student has a question pertaining to the chapter being taught it should be addressed at once rather than at the end of the class. But if a student has a question concerning something other than the chapter being taught it should be covered either before or after official class time.
Your CFI Tool Box CD (PVT) contains a class syllabus that may be a good starting point from which to tailor your own class.
Included on the Knowledge test CD is also a complete set of chapter and practice tests with answer keys, all in Word format. There are three tests per chapter and two practice finals. These can be printed for class testing. This file also includes the FAA test banks in “Word” and PDF. All are printable.
Flight Training Extra Visuals CD
Our second CD contains hundreds of illustrations from the
most used FAA publications. The “Pilots
Hand book of Aeronautical Knowledge,” “Airplane
Flying Hand book,” and “The Instrument Flying Hand book.”
To begin, place the Extra Visuals CD into the CD/DVD drive.
The window shown below will open.
![]()
Left click on the flight training Extra Visuals icon and the following icons should appear.
![]()
Left click any of the 3 icons to open the appropriate file below. Then open each presentation as needed.

These illustrations are already placed in PowerPoint presentations by publication and by chapter. They are meant for use in designing your own flight training presentations.
To start simply open a blank PowerPoint presentation and then copy and paste the slides from our CD in any order you wish into your own custom show. The illustrations in each slide can be sized to fit and any text you want can be added.
HINT: For best image clarity it may be best to copy and than paste your selected illustration or slide directly into the slide show you are creating rather than saving to an intermediate file and then creating your presentation from that file.
A good way to start is with a short presentation of 4 to 6 slides with text added.
This PowerPoint material has been used in MS Office, Word, and PowerPoint 2000, 2002XP, 2003, 2007, and 2010 with no problems. Please note that using Word 2007/2010 in earlier versions of Word will require an update available free from Microsoft updates on line.
On Line Testing
CFI Tool Box offers an online chapter and practice final testing service with you the flight instructor in complete
control of the testing process, for a very reasonable per student fee. This service gives you the ability to do
all testing on line and never have to hand out or hand correct any written tests. The testing center will be
yours to control and administer as you see fit. We email you the pass words
and you assign them to your students. You
can test, and retest as often as you like, and review their scores and progress
at any time. You can even see the completed test pages with the correct and
incorrect answers. Each test must be reset by the flight instructor before it
can be taken a second time. After that no resetting is needed to retest.
On line testing saves a lot of classroom time and provides
excellent flexibility for you and your students. This service is available only to flight instructor’s using our CD.
We recommend the aviation instructor include online testing fees in the total cost per student and encourage all flight instructors to use it. Each flight student password is 6 months in duration.
Start up begins with a free flight instructor account and also one free student account for the CFI to use as a class example.
To inquire we recommend emailing us at customerservice@cfitoolbox.com or call 815-943-8785 for info. The pass words can be purchased on our web site in any quantity only by CFI’s using our CD’s.
Set up your student test
center accounts as follows.
1
- Go to www.aavtrain.com for
direct access, or go to www.cfitoolbox.com and
click on the test center tab.
2 -
When the test center login page appears simply click on the "1ST
time students register here box" A registration form
will open.
3 -
When filling out the form please note the student user name should
be composed by you the instructor. We suggest that the user name relate in
some way to the course, school, or student. Use a different
user name for each student.
4 - The
student pass word is case sensitive and should be entered exactly as
received. All pass words are upper case. Note; zero and the
letter O look similar.
5 -
When the form is complete click "SUBMIT". If the form was
correctly filled out a "Thank you" message will appear. BE SURE TO
PRINT THIS PAGE USING THE Ctrl - P keys, or make some other written
record. It will be your only printed record of the students user name and
pass word combination.
6 - You
may now close out your browser and return to the test center and
use either your student log in data to take tests, or your CFI log in data
to manage test results.
Alternate method for setting up flight student
accounts.
1
- Go to www.aavtrain.com and
enter your CFI user name and pass word. When your CFI account opens click
on "ADD A STUDENT". The registration form will appear. Steps 3
thru 5 can then be performed.
Once
submitted, a flight student user name and pass word cannot be
changed. Other parts of the student data can be edited but
when edited may cause duplicate test results. This is a normal
function.
Once a
student account is deleted it cannot be recovered, and all data will
be lost including the pass word. Should that accidentally occur contact us for
a replacement student account.
Test center operation
We
suggest you take some tests using your student account and then using your flight
instructor account observe your results and do some re sets, and test
deletions. Be careful not to delete the entire student account. You cannot
take the same test a second time unless it has been re set. Once a test
has been re set the first time it can be taken repeatedly. To view a test
supplement while testing click on the appropriate link on the left side
bar of the test page and the supplement will appear in a separate window.
We also recommend the use of the Gleim written test software for final test prep. This software can be purchased by individual students or the FBO version may be used by the school, FBO, or CFI. Contact Gleim publications for information on these.
